Trial Description

To assess the management of acute stroke in the elderly in a stroke unit and medical units.

Trial Design

Randomized, controlled trial of 277 patients.

Patient Involvement

Patients were randomized to enter either a stroke unit or a medical unit. All patients in the stroke unit and 94% of patients in the medical units received physical therapy. 97% of the patients in the stroke unit and 60% of the patients in the medical units received occupational therapy. Care in the stroke unit was based on a coordinated team approach in which patients were encouraged to take an active role from the beginning of rehabilitation.
