Trial Description

To investigate the effect on functional outcome of previous statin treatment and its withdrawal after the onset of symptoms in patients with acute ischemic stroke.

Interventions

  • Atorvastatin (LipitorĀ®)Drug

    Intervention Desc: Competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase; lowers cholesterol and lipids

Trial Design

Intervention, randomized, double-blind, placebo control, parallel assignment, efficacy study.

Patient Involvement

Patients were randomly assigned either to statin withdrawal for the first 3 days after admission (n = 46) or to immediately receive atorvastatin 20 mg/day (n = 43).

Outcomes

Primary Mortality rate or dependency (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score > 2) at 3 months.
Secondary Early neurologic deterioration (END) and infarct volume at 4 to 7 days.
