To investigate the effect on functional outcome of previous statin treatment and its withdrawal after the onset of symptoms in patients with acute ischemic stroke.

Intervention, randomized, double-blind, placebo control, parallel assignment, efficacy study.
Patients were randomly assigned either to statin withdrawal for the first 3 days after admission (n = 46) or to immediately receive atorvastatin 20 mg/day (n = 43).
