Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

Focal neurological deficits of presumed vascular origin with acute onset and persisting at the time of study inclusion, able to begin treatment within 48 hours of onset of symptoms, hemoglobin levels between 120 and 180 g/l, plasma creatine <300.

Exclusion Criteria

Macroscopically overt hemorrhage in the CSF, myocardial infarction during previous week, no severe angina pectoris with overt signs of left ventricular failure, severe disorders in terminal stage, coma not responding to pain stimuli, ongoing treatment with anticoagulants.
