Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

Persistent or intermittent AF as confirmed by ECG.

Exclusion Criteria

For low-intensity AC: less than 60 years of age, limited life expectancy (malignancy, dementia), anemia, treatable cause for AF, rheumatic heart disease, myocardial infarction during the last year, cardiomyopathy, chronic heart failure (NY Heart Grade IV), history of cardiac aneurysm, history of systemic embolism, cardiovascular surgery in the previous year, previous stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic), retinal infarct, expected problems with follow-up, or medication intolerance (ventricular or duodenal ulcer in the previous 3 years, gastrointestinal bleeding in the last year, aspirin allergy, clotting disease, serious liver or renal disease, or urogenital bleeding in the past year). For regular-intensity AC therapy: age over 78 years, blood pressure with diastolic pressure > 105 and/or systolic pressure > 185 mm Hg, retinopathy, gastrointestinal or genito-urinary bleeding, or ventricular or duodenal ulcer.
