Trial Description

To compare a combination therapy of acetylsalicylic acid and dipyridamole with pentoxifylline alone in the prevention of recurrent cerebral ischemic attacks.

Interventions

  • Dipyridamole (Persantine┬«)Drug
    Intervention Desc: Platelet aggregation inhibitor
  • Pentoxifylline (Trental┬«)Drug
    Intervention Desc: Vasodilator. In addition, may reduce viscosity or improve erythrocyte flexibility.

Trial Design

Randomized trial of 138 patients at three Buenos Aires hospitals.

Patient Involvement

Patients were randomized to receive a combination of acetylsalicylic acid and dipyridamole (ASAD, 1,050 mg + 150 mg/day) or pentoxifylline (PTX 1,200 mg/day). Treatment was continued and patients were followed up monthly for 1 year.
