Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

Acute ischemic stroke in the carotid artery territory presenting within 6 hours of onset, between 45 and 75 years of age, conscious or mildly obtunded (baseline Orgogozo Stroke Scale (OSS) score > 15).

Exclusion Criteria

Previous stroke with residual neurological impairment, having any other disorder that would interfere with neurological or functional assessment, life-threatening concurrent illness, congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction (within previous 6 weeks), ECG findings of ventricular arrhythmia, second-or third-degree atrioventricular block.
