Memantine and Constraint-Induced Language Therapy in Chronic Poststroke Aphasia:A Randomized Controlled Trial

Phase 4 Results

Memantine improved global aphasia severity (WAB) compared to placebo while the drug was taken (weeks 16, 18, and 20) and at the washout assessment. An increase in CAL was found in favor of memantine-CIAT relative to placebo-CIAT (week 18). CIAT treatment led to improvement in both groups, which was even greater under additional memantine treatment. Beneficial effects of memantine were maintained in the long-term follow-up evaluation and patients who switched to memantine from placebo experienced a benefit.
