Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

Patients who present within 6 months of an atherosclerotic transient ischemic attack (TIA) or non-disabling stroke (Rankin score =< 3) will be eligible.

Exclusion Criteria

Pregnant females and persons with a strict indication for anticoagulants, who have a comorbid illness expected to cause death within weeks or months, who have had a myocardial infarction in the preceding month, who are scheduled for coronary bypass surgery or PTCA, who have a cardiac source of embolism, including atrial fibrillation and valve disease, who have hemoglobin =< 6.0 mmol/L, hematocrit >= 0.60, or a platelet count >= 500x109 or =< 100x109, who have an intracranial bleed, cerebral tumor, subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhage, a planned carotid endarterectomy, or whose TIA's or strokes were caused by vasculitis, migraine, or dissection, who have severe hypertension (systolic blood pressure =< 180 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure =< 120 mm Hg despite treatment), known liver failure, non-treated peptic ulcer, any gastrointestinal or urogenital bleeds in the past 6 months, any coagulopathy, intracranial bleeding in the past 6 weeks, hemorrhagic retinopathy, or chronic alcohol abuse, who cannot discontinue any use of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs or other platelet aggregation inhibitors, who are allergic or intolerant to aspirin, have bronchial asthma requiring medication, who cannot communicate well in the national language, or who are presumed to be non-compliant, will be excluded.
