Early heparin therapy in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage

Completed

Phase N/A Results

Trial Description

To investigate the effect of low-dose heparin treatment beginning on the second, fourth, or tenth day in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage.

Interventions

Trial Design

Randomized, controlled trial of 68 patients.

Patient Involvement

Patients were randomized to receive low-dose heparin (3 x 5000 units heparin-sodium/day sc) beginning on either the tenth day of treatment (group 1), the fourth day (group 2) or the second day (group 3). Group 1 served as the control group because heparin treatment beginning on day 10 of treatment was the standard treatment protocol in the intensive care unit. All patients received basic intensive care medication and regular diagnostic evaluations.

Outcomes

Type Measure Time Frame Safety Issue
Primary Incidence of pulmonary embolism, deep-vein thrombosis and rebleeding after 10 days of treatment.
