Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

Patients who presented within 6 hours of middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory ischemic stroke, who had a baseline National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score > = 15, who were eligible for intravenous thrombolysis or intra-arterial thrombolysis/thrombectomy, who had an NIHSS score >= 8 after thrombolytic therapy, and who could be treated with hypothermia within either 5 hours (in the case of intravenous thrombolysis) or 8 hours of symptom onset (in the case of intra-arterial thrombolysis), were eligible for this study.

Exclusion Criteria

Patients with bacteremia and clinical septic syndrome within 72 hours, a platelet count < 75,000/mm3, any coagulopathy, defined as an international normalized ratio (INR) > 1.3, a partial thromboplastin time (PTT) >1.5 X the normal value, or hypofibrinogenemia, who have hemodynamically significant cardiac dysrhythmias, QTc intervals > 450 milliseconds, any preexisting illness that limits life expectancy to < 6 months after stroke, or a pre-stroke modified Rankin Scale (MRS) score > 2, were excluded from this study.
