Trial Description

To compare therapy input and outcome in stroke patients.

Interventions

Trial Design

Prospective, stratified, randomized, controlled trial of 245 patients at a single center. Stratification was by prognosis.

Patient Involvement

All patients received care in the general medical wards during the acute phase of their illness. Two weeks after stroke onset, patients were stratified into one of three groups based on prognosis and were randomized to receive care in a stroke rehabilitation unit or in general medical wards. All patients received nursing care, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy and assistance in seeking long-term care if necessary. Patients were followed until discharge from hospital.

Outcomes
