Clopidogrel and Aspirin for Reduction of Emboli in Symptomatic Carotid Stenosis "CARESS"

There was a significant reduction in the number of MES-positive patients at day 7 in the combination therapy group (43.8%, n=51) compared to the aspirin alone group (72.7%, n=56, p=0.0046). MES frequency per hour was reduced by 61.4% (P=0.0013) in the combination group at day 7 and by 61.6% (P=0.0005) on day 2. Four recurrent strokes and 7 TIAs were observed in the aspirine alone group, whereas in the combination group there were no recurrent strokes and 4 TIAs.
