At a mean follow-up of 11.9 months there was a significant reduction in stroke or crescendo TIA in patients receiving carotid endarterectomies (7.7%) compared to nonsurgical patients (19.4%). The benefit was more pronounced in patients with internal carotid artery stenosis of greater than 70%. 3 deaths occurred in the surgical group within 30 days of surgery.
