Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

Ischemic cerebrovascular event (TIA, transient monocular blindness or small completed stroke) ipsilateral to carotid stenosis within 120 days of entry.

Exclusion Criteria

Global ischemia, focal seizures, vertebrobasilar ischemia, mass lesions, major strokes, potential cardiac source of emboli, subarachnoid or intracerebral hemorrhage, prior ipsilateral carotid endarterectomy, prior EC/IC bypass, preexisting incapacitating neurological disease, significant psychiatric illness or intellectual incapacity, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, severe hypertension, renal failure, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, malignancy with life expectancy <3 years, emergent medical condition, concurrent use of oral anticoagulants, unreliable or noncompliant patients. Computed tomography (CT) exclusion of edema, hemorrhage, nonvascular lesions potentially related to symptoms or duplex ultrasound of stenosis less than 50% ipsilateral to the presenting symptoms.
