Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

Asymptomatic stenosis (50-90%) of the internal carotid artery.

Exclusion Criteria

Greater than 90% stenosis or occlusion of the ICA; less than 50% stenosis of both ICAs; greater than 50% stenosis of the intracranial portion of the ICA; greater than 50% stenosis of the common carotid artery; greater than 50% bilateral stenosis of both vertebral arteries; subclavian steal syndrome; surgery of carotid stenosis within previous 3 months, myocardial infarction within previous 6 months; contraindication against aspirin, renal failure, dementia of any type; other severe disease limiting life expectancy.
