Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

Patients who had suspected cortical stroke, a National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score > 4, and could be treated within 6 hours of stroke onset, were eligible for this study.

Exclusion Criteria

Patients with an NIHSS 1a score > 1, an NIHSS score > 20 (right hemisphere) or > 25 (left hemisphere), who were ethanol-intoxicated, who consumed excessive daily amounts of caffeine, or who had significant cardiac arrhythmia, were excluded from this trial.
