Ischemic Stroke Costs (First 90 Days), 1993

The Stroke Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT) study, conducted in 1993 with funding from the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, obtained cost data from a random sample of 80,000 stroke patients largely covered by Medicare [Stroke. Clinical Updates. 1994;5:1. Englewood, CO: National Stroke Association].  The PORT study fond that the average cost per ischemic stroke patient during the first 90 days was divided almost equally between the expense of the initial hospitalization and expenses incurred after discharge.
