Ischemic Stroke and Intracerebral
Hemorrhage Mortality Rates in Men
According to Diastolic BP and
Serum Cholesterol Levels
The relationship of total serum
cholesterol and ischemic stroke is unclear and inconsistent.
Data from the Framingham Study showed no clear influence of
total cholesterol on the incidence of atherothrombotic brain
infarction [Wolf PA, et al, 1992].
However, the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention
Trial (MRFIT) provided evidence for a direct relationship
between high levels of serum cholesterol and ischemic stroke,
particularly in hypertensive men [Iso H, et al, 1989].
At the same time, there was also evidence of a relationship
between low total serum cholesterol and increased incidence
of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in men with diastolic blood
pressure above 90 mmHg.
