Controlled trial of aspirin and dipyridamole in the secondary prevention of athero-thrombotic cerebral ischemia
|
Status:
Trial complete. Results published 1/83.
Purpose:
To determine whether aspirin or aspirin + dipyridamole would produce a significant reduction in the subsequent occurrence of fatal and nonfatal cerebral infarction.
Design:
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 604 patients.
Inclusion Criteria
Atherothrombotic cerebral ischemic event (transient or completed) referable either to the carotid or to the vertebral-basilar circulation.
Patient Involvement:
Patients were randomized into one of three groups: A-aspirin (1 g/day); AD-aspirin (1 g/day) + dipyridamole (225 mg/day); P-placebo. Follow-up period of 3 years.
Primary Outcome:
Recurrence of fatal or nonfatal cerebral infarction within 3 years.
Results:
The number of fatal and nonfatal cerebral infarctions was 31 in the placebo (P) group, 17 in the A group and 18 in the AD group. Groups A and AD, taken together, had a significantly lower rate of stroke recurrence compared to the placebo group. There was no difference between groups A and AD.
